•Step 1
Decide the generator size and power capability that best fits your needs. Standby generators are costly, and you won't need a commercial-sized generator to run a small house.
•Step 2
Place the generator on high ground to avoid flooding and damaging the unit-build up ground with gravel. Install it as close as possible to the propane tank that will fuel it, but not less than 20 feet.
•Step 3
Dig a trench to run the fuel supply line from the generator to the propane tank. Your gas company should hook up the power supply and demand regulator. Regulators are recommended, but are not always included with the generator; in most cases, the gas company must supply them.
•Step 4
Install an automatic transfer switch to your home circuit breaker panel. Install a sub-panel for all breakers to be powered by the generator. Follow all applicable local electrical codes.
•Step 5
Run the generator through a break-in procedure. Use the transfer switch to turn on the circuits. Run the generator at 25 percent load for one hour, then increase the load 25 percent per hour until the generator is running at 100 percent load. Then run at a 100 percent load for one hour
